I would say that the prime goal would be to have anything that streams from the drive while you work (Project files etc.) goes on the internal SSD, and anything that can be prefetched and held in ram goes on the external (i.e. Again, the Audio Units plug-ins themselves (files that have a ".component" extension) have to go in one of the locations mentioned above, while their associated samples can be put virtually anywhere. These libraries can be quite large and therefore may need to be put in other drives to keep things under control space-wise. There are however plug-ins that have an associated library of samples. The difference being that plug-ins stored in the second location can only be accessed by your user account, while plug-ins stored in the first location can be accessed by all user accounts on the computer.
